We all know the benefits of cycling. That is why the supporters of two wheels were glad to hear that the season break of many municipal vehicle rental stations was over on March 1. As we read on the Veturilo website , at the beginning of this month the cycling season began in 14 cities served by Nextbike Polska. These are Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Komorniki, Kołobrzeg, Konin, Konstancin-Jeziorna, Koszalin, Luboń, Marki, Piaseczno, Poznań, Szamotuły, Tarnów, Zielona Góra and of course Warsaw.
The situation is so unexpected because BikeU had a contract with the city for 8 years until 2024. Meanwhile, in November last year, news appeared about the denunciation by the operator. The reason for the decision was mainly legal changes and financial issues. The city authorities said that BikeU indicated the increase in the cost of employment of employees was the main reason.
On November 21, an official announcement appeared on the Wavelo fanpage that at the end of 2019 the city bike project will be closed. However, the residents hoped that the service would still be available, e.g. after it was taken over by another external company. Especially since the information was given in February by the local press.
Meanwhile, “Gazeta Krakowska” announced a fiasco, confirming reports that Wavelo bicycles will definitely disappear from this year’s streets in Krakow. The vehicles have already been taken from the stations, which will be gradually dismantled. Krakow is to look for solutions and a new operator. At the moment, however, there is no indication that there is any chance for the return of city bikes earlier than spring 2021.
